This Post Aboriginal Modernist piece was inspired by a recent trip to Anna Maria Island on the gulf coast of Florida where sea birds and ocean life surrounded us during the Holmes Beach art show this winter. Paul Stevens, one of my favorite photographers that often shows with me, created the photograph that inspired this particular piece in a series of Pelican paintings I am doing. Rather than capture the realistic qualities of the photo reference, I chose to start with a black base coat on canvas and build up towards the light using very fine pinstripe brushes and layers of patterned marks that I create serendipitously throughout the process.
